American Idol 2007 Episode 19 - Top 16 Elimination Show Review

Submitted by The Critic on Thu, 2007-03-08 19:05.

Congratulations American Idol!! 200 Episodes!

Here we are again at the weekly elimination show but this week there are rumors a plenty as to what's coming. While the last two weeks we've seen two people from each group being sent home, this week there has been speculation that the top 12 contestants will be made up of the contestants with the highest number of votes from this weeks show.

This is an interesting scenario because if this is the case then it is expected that it will be the guys that will be hit hard as I think it's the general consensus that the girls are stronger this year. However, There are two girls that have been taking a large protion of the Idolblog.com poll vote meaning that it could actually be anyone's game.

In light of this, we'll break down the poll information along with some collating of the data to see what results we might see if this scenario is correct.

From the guys, the two contestants with the lowest votes were Jared Cotter (2%) and Brandon Rogers (4%) while Phil Stacey (4%) wasn't too far back in third lowest place. The guy with the most votes this week was Blake Lewis (40%) with Chris Sligh in second place on (25%).

From the Girls, Stephanie Edwards (2%) takes the bottom place with Haley Scarnato (3%) in the next place while Sabrina Sloan (3%) wasn't too far ahead in the votes. The girl with the best number of votes was unsurprisingly Melinda Doolittle who took over half the entire vote with 51%. Lakisha Jones came in next, again as no surprise, on 21% making it the third week in a row that they have both managed to complete the voting being the only two reaching double digits.

So, what happens when it comes down to the four contestants with the lowest number of votes?

The lowest number of votes from both polls was Stephanie Edwards, Jared Cotter, Haley Scarnato and Brandon Rogers with Phil Stacey not too far away.

When we take a look at the single poll of the Top 16 favourites, Brandon Rogers, Jared Cotter and Phil Stacey took the bottom three places while the fourth place was taken equally by Sabrina Sloan, Sundance Head and Stephanie Edwards.

It's interesting to note that the polls still have two guys and two girls being eliminated when it comes to the lowest number of votes overall but when you look at the entire top 16 poll, it could very well be 4 guys packing their bags and heading home.

The Dial Idol results have Phil Stacey and Sundance Head in the bottom places with Jared Cotter in the third place for the guys and Stephanie Edwards and Haley Scarnato for the girls with Sabrina Sloan in the next spot. The elimination is on now so it's just a matter of time before we know who will be in our top 12 for 2007.

Carrie Underwood is in the house tonight performing Carrie Underwood - Some Hearts - Wasted Wasted. GREAT song from her debut album.

Stay tuned for the results as they happen:

Going home:
Jared Cotter, Sundance Head
Antonella Barba, Sabrina Sloan

Well, I must say it is a surprise to see Antonella going home. Now she has a predicament though. Does she take the $250,000 offer from Girls Gone Wild or whatever was on the table from Hugh Hefner.

So that's it. Your top twelve are:
Blake Lewis, Lakisha Jones, Brandon Rogers, Stephanie Edwards, Chris Richardson, Melinda Doolittle, Phil Stacey, Haley Scarnato, Sanjaya Malakar, Gina Glocksen and Chris Sligh

I think Sanjaya is the worst singer I have ever heard in my life!!!!!!!!!!!! He definitely needs to go, but he won't because his fans are all teenage girls and he is a pretty boy. Some people are voting clearly by looks and not listening to the singing. The judges keep saying it is a singing competition but it is all about the VOTE!!!!!!!!!! I honestly don't know how Sanjaya got into the top 12. Just my opinion.

Idol Thoughts (not verified) Mon, 2007-03-12 15:07

Its very disappointing that Sabrina is not going to be a part of this year's Top 12. In reflecting on the past five seasons of the show, I think Sabrina is probably the most talented contestant to get booted in the semifinals. Season 1's Angela Peel just missed the cut, but she would likely not made much of an impression with both Tamyra and Kelly around. The fact that both Season 2 and Season 3 had 4 Wildcard spots ensured that no one too deserving missed out on a spot in the finals. Nikko Smith missed the cut in Season 5, but he ended up a finalist anyways when Mario Vasquez dropped out of the competition. And while Ayla Brown or Gedeon McKinney were arguably as good as Melissa McGhee or Kevin Covais, neither possessed the talent and stage presence of Sabrina Sloan. 'Tis a shame.

I am wondering why did Paula, Simon and Randy even allowed Sanjaya, Haley or Antonella in the semifinal. (I think they should responsible on bringing those people in the semi-spot) I remember when they put Kevin Covais on previous AI.

I saw many talented performers on the audition but didnt make it through...

Sooner or later, only Melinda ,Lakisha, Blake and Crish Sligh will compete back to back.

However, AI is all about the look that matter and business of earning money in entertainment industry......At last, it is just a competition........Have fun!!!!!

GO DR. DOOLITTLE.......!!!!!!

WOW! It's a conspiracy of Indian call center operators! Sanjiya has connections to the all-powerful call centers in Delhi even though he is only half Indian himself and has never even been there.

That must be it.

It couldn't be that a sweet, moderately talented, teenaged boy who is, yes, a bit effeminate, may have made a connection with a portion of the voting audience. Maybe teenaged girls who like his hair. Or all the scrawny geeky mild-mannered boys who have had to take the blows of adolesence from their All-American, corn-fed, football-playing, girl-gawking male peers.

Remember, it's usually the scrawny, mild-mannered geeky boys who get the last laugh. How many former football stars are still back home wondering what happened to their popularity, working at the feed store or selling cars on Dad's lot, while the geeky Sanjiya's of the world move to the cities and through decency, brains and hard work rise up the corporate ladder, raise good families with love and tenderness and get their greatest revenge - through living well.

It's a little sad to me that everyone needs to find some "Indian Call Center" conspiracy to justify why a slightly effeminate teenaged boy who has courageously stepped outsided of his element and shot for the stars could possibly be successful.

There is a LOT of pure meanness, even hate, displayed here about Sanjiya. And it's way out of proportion.

I'm scared that it reflects something darker about our collective psyches.

And no, I don't think he deserves to be here based upon his talent and I don't enjoy listening to him sing.

But there is obviously an element out there who likes him, who enjoys him, and they're picking up their phones and dialing 1-866-IDOLSXX just like you and me. Maybe they're using their dialidol software, but that's not limited to fans of Sanjiya.

Ultimately, it's a contest of advancement by the contestants who get the most phone calls by people who care enough to pick up the phone or hook up their modem and their dialidol software. That's all it is.

And I'm really beginning to question how there can be so much hate for a decent teenaged boy. It scares me a little.

This conspiracy theory nonsense reflects an irrational fear or, at the least, ignorance. Dialidol predicted he would stay (although it was within the margin of error) based upon busy signals received and that information is made available BY STATE (and they don't count votes from India or China or Jhibuti or Guatemala). He's simply getting the votes.

I'm not going to say "Deal with it." You don't have to deal wtih anything you don't want to deal with. But this is a very bad reflection on who we are as a people. And all about a meaningless, but FUN!, talent contest. God help us if a Sanjiya got enough votes to be a governor, a senator or president. I guess you'd blame that on a terrorist plot!

Give the kid a break.

steve (not verified) Fri, 2007-03-09 15:37

Get real, people! Lose the prejudicial views and comments about people getting the "fat vote" or the "black vote" or the "Indian vote". And as far as a Jihad being called, come on? 80% of the population in India is Hindu, not Muslim. Every season there have been major upsets and not all of them are so easy to call out with a specific "class" vote.

The problem with the voting is that the producers want us to vote on that week's best singer, or maybe even just your favorite singer. This will automatically cause a split in votes for great performers.

Ideally, the producers would change the system so that we're voting off the worst singer and not voting for someone to stay. So a difference in opinion might keep the worst performer around for an extra week or 2, but you'd always be getting rid of someone at the bottom and the top few would always be safe until you got down to the top 3 or 4.

Nick__C (not verified) Fri, 2007-03-09 19:31

Steve,

It's not prejudiced to make mention of voting blocs, i.e. "the black vote." Although it might sound crass, it's a reality of democracy. Certain groups of people vote in certain ways. If that wasn't true, politics in general wouldn't be what it is today.

The fact that voting blocs exist makes it all the more special when a candidate transcends race and is able to capture the attention of the voters. This holds in politics and it holds in American Idol.

With regard to voting off the worst instead of picking your favorite, I think that would put a negative spin on the show which would ultimately make it less pleasant to watch. Plus people could game the system by voting for good singers who they think threaten their favorites. The current system ain't perfect, but it works.

To the Sanjaya haters: Even though his bloc of popularity will hold him in for a while, I personally think it's inconcievable for him to last longer than 4-5 weeks. It's more likely for his lifespan to be shorter. So don't worry, your suffering will be over sooner or later.

oxy (not verified) Fri, 2007-03-09 15:15

Sanjaya is not good ! seriously this is a singing competition, the judges shouldnt have chosen him fo the top 24 also. now they made a mistake and they have to deal with sanjaya ROFL
i totally agree with WHYSANJAYA
im from the subcontinent myself.

Justmyhumbleopinion (not verified) Fri, 2007-03-09 11:11

Sanjaya won...it is what it is...why can people just learn to deal with it! I don't think he is one of the best singers. The fact is that he has a sweet personality and people like him...or perhaps lots of teens are voting and they truly like him. The judges don't have a saying on who stays in the competition. I agree that Sundance should have stayed. But in my personal opinion Chris Richardson, Phil Stacey and Haley Scarnato should not have been on the top 12 at all either. People critize Sanjaya just because he was the one that stayed instead of Sundance but they don't realize that those other 3 took Sundance place also.
As I said before it is what it is...deal with it!

WhySanjaya (not verified) Fri, 2007-03-09 10:32

I'm pretty sure that Sanjaya is still on becuase he has a big block vote of Indian people all across the country who will vote for him no matter what he sounds like. So he won't be voted off untill the rest of America over powers their block. Probably not for a few more shows.

Thank goodness. Cause he sucks.

(I'm from the subcontinent by the way, so I'm pretty sure this is what's going on. The funny thing is that they'll vote for him, but they probably wouldn't buy his record if he were to win.)

mkd (not verified) Fri, 2007-03-09 09:10

It doesn't matter how the male votes went because our next Idol will be female. None of the males are as strong as the females - including Hayley. Hayley reminds me of Katherine from last season and that is the only reason she made the top 12. I didn't think Katherine should have made it to the finale last season. Sabrina is clearly a better artist, singer, performer than Hayley will ever be. Sabrina will get signed somewhere and will be the biggest upset in a sales perspective to all the Idol winners. Forget Jennifer Hudson, Sabrina is a way better singer and looks 10x better than Jennifer. She will probably be signed before the end of next week, I hope she can get her debut single out in the next 2 months, wouldn't that just rock the world, she can come back later in the show and sing her #1 debut, chart smashing single!!!!
Antonella looks afraid of the stage, not a strong singer or performer - she needed to go; Sundance needs more tuning, he's fun to watch but he's not on pitch - could have stayed around one more week; Jared is one of the better male voices but I think his attitude got him voted off - he needed to go; And Hayley should have gone no doubt! Sanjaya will stay alot longer than he should, might even make the top 5 but he needed to go this week also.
GOOD LUCK SABRINA!!!

txlib (not verified) Fri, 2007-03-09 15:52

Yes, Sanjaya is the worst. We all know that. It's a farce.
Sabrina, however, deserved to go because she's a cold, boring, calculating, automaton - no connection, removed from the audience. She was consistently in tune, I'll give you that, but her sound leaves much to be desired. Shrieky and always the same, no variation.
Haley (Hailey, Haylie, HeyLee, whatever) is mediocre, true. That's all there is to say about that.
Sundance - nice guy, not very good, but would listen to him ANY DAY over Sanjaya. Hell, I'd rather go on a double date with Antonella than listen to or watch Sanjaya.
Hmmm, call centers. My mother holds strongly to the same conspiracy theory. Must one be American to vote for American Idol?
Whatever the case, I think Americans have once and for all proven they can't handle voting. We need to put this feeble democracy out of its misery. It pains me to watch it fumble about, blindly stumbling into walls and crying out for more painkillers. Let's do the humane thing, people.

Meaghan (not verified) Fri, 2007-03-09 08:53

Vote for the Worst

This probably has a little something to do with Sanjaya still being there - I mean I think it's apparent to everyone he's not there on talent - I think it's all just a joke.

ramz (not verified) Fri, 2007-03-09 07:44

You guys got it all wrong. This will tick everyone off: SUNDANCE should NEVER have been in the competition. If anyone got in because of a good first audition and a LOT of charm, it was he. During Hollywood week he was aweful, but Simon and Paula liked his personality and admitted he didn't do well but they liked his original audition. When he got picked over that other kid from LA (his name escapes me) I was shocked. They weren't even in the same league, but the guy he beat had a cockiness problem. Then, he bores everyone the first week but passes on personality. Next, he does a terribly boring version of Mustang Sally, but everyone seems to love it-- again they comment that the song fits his PERSONALITY. Finally, he hacks a great Pearl Jam song that was way too big for him. He was off-key, his voice was thin and strained-- HE's NOT THAT GOOD, people. He's a bar band singer. He'll get a deal from someone. Simon sure liked him enough that I bet he signs him on the side.

Surely Sanjaya doesn't have what it takes to win, or even compete-- I thought his sister was better and certainly hotter. But he was no worse than Sundance this week. I thought he should have been gone last week, though!

The biggest crime last night was Sabrina Sloan-- clearly one of the top 4 female voices. Randy was right when he said "America got it wrong."

Haley should never have made it past Hollywood week either. She sounds like Kathy Lee singing on "Musical Chairs" back in the 70s. Yeah, she is beautiful, but she should be singiing on a cruise ship or something.

Both she and Sanjaya (and Antonella until last night), I believe, got votes via the "pity factor". It seems this season that when Simon wastes someone with the truth about their inability to sing, there is a backlash of votes for that person. Phil was horrible the other night, Simon told him so, and he got voted in, too. However, I think Phil deserves to be in with the guys.

Sabrina got the opposite-- she was given a vote of confidence by the judges and the public slacked off on voting for her.

The bottom line, no matter who you like: it's a crapshoot. There's no rhyme or reason.

idolatry (not verified) Fri, 2007-03-09 07:23

The most likely scenario is that Sanjaya - because of his ethnicity - got millions of computer-generated votes from overseas call centers.
The American Idol producers, who have had vote-counting controversy before (recall the Rueben vs. Clay vote count), had better invest some money into (1) anti-hacking software, and (2) better definition of what "votes" actually count.

need the truth (not verified) Fri, 2007-03-09 04:04

Sanjaya is a joke there is no way he won,but he is from the home town of micorsoft inc.,this was not a real win and I hope that the show finds out what really happened to the vote.I hate the thought of this show being fake.

mr northup (not verified) Fri, 2007-03-09 06:16

I use to love American Idol , it is no longer the best singer but who is the richest, the cutest , or who has the most friends, Last nites show was a joke, two contestants should without doubt be in the top 12.. Sabrina and sundance, what is wrong with this show, Cmon sanjaya and hailey dont even come close. If this show is to continue to be a success it better find a better way to select voting in a different way, American idol should take presidents and do the right thing and reinstate sundance and sabrina and show the country the show is real and does makes stupid mistakes. thank you

XXXXX (not verified) Fri, 2007-03-09 03:38

Sanjaya is the worst, If he has any manhood at all he would step down for the rightful winner..but maybe its his lack of manhood is why he is still in...what a let down for the American idol show.

fan to flat (not verified) Fri, 2007-03-09 01:30

what? sanjaya in sundance out.... i cannot agree anymore. sanjaya should have been voted out in the top 20. dumb all you who voted for sanjaya

Elizabeth (not verified) Thu, 2007-03-08 23:46

What happened??? Sundance was one of the best? I'd like to know how the line distribution is set up, since I tried to vote for him the last two weeks, and never even got through.!! I thought it was a joke at first. It's probably all rigged but they should at least make it look somewhat believable. I'm not watching the show anymore, this was too much of a let-down.

Shawn (not verified) Thu, 2007-03-08 23:19

Sanjaya is HOT! But not as a singer - as a twink! I watch his bulge every week and it gets me off each week!

mkh (not verified) Thu, 2007-03-08 22:30

There is NO way Sundance should have been voted off this week. He's great. Sunjaya should not even have been invited to Hollywood much less be taking up a spot that a real singer should have.

Likewise, Sabrina was much better than What's Her Name? When she came on to sing Wed, neither of us even remembered her on the show! She looked like she felt guilty for taking a spot from a real singer tonight.

suzanne (not verified) Thu, 2007-03-08 23:12

There is noway that Sujaya should still be competing in this competition. The "boy" can not sing. I agree with others that he has the entire "helpdesk" system dialing for him. This is rigged! Is there no way it can be stopped? The judes even looked dumb struck. Last week, Sujaya looked dumb struck too. Give eveybody and they ears a break and get rid of him.

mgm (not verified) Fri, 2007-03-09 07:22

Come on America wake up, A Jihad has been declared on American Idol Sujaya is a terrible singer and looks like a third grader on stage at his elementary school performing for the PTA. ALL OF HIS VOTES ARE COMING FROM PAKISTAN AND INDIA, AMERICA YOU GOT TO VOTE TO GET THIS GUY OUT OF THE COMPETITION BECAUSE HE DOES NOT HAVE THE ##### TO STEP DOWN.

Nick__C (not verified) Thu, 2007-03-08 22:18

I was on the whole surprised by the votes tonight. I did pick Jared going home, but that was the only one I got right. Here's my analysis:

Sanjaya was not surprising for me. He's clearly got a large bloc of support. What will be interesting is to see how that bloc reacts to the new female competition. I think we'll get to see his enormous grin and his increasingly womanly hairstyles for at least two more weeks.

Sundance was surprising. I figured America loved a jolly fat man, and this constituent would have been large enough for Sundance and Fat Chris to share the votes without a major split. However, I should have taken into consideration the fact that Chris sung above average and Sundance sung below average on Tuesday, so the fat vote must have gone entirely Chris's way.

Sabrina was very surprising. Although she was doing poorly in the poll on this site, another site conducted a poll asking "Who would you like to see win it all?" (instead of "Whose performance did you like best?"). Sabrina came in 3rd on that poll, I believe, and she even did better than Melinda. Incidentally, Antonella came in 2nd on that poll, which makes its credibility somewhat suspect.

Which takes me to what I thought was the most surprising result of all. I was certain Antonella had a bloc of support from guys who thought she was cute. This was evident from every poll I've seen online. The lesson here is that internet polls are not accurate representations of America's opinion. I have three theories of why she might have been eliminated.
i) Her bloc wasn't big enough to keep her in the competition
ii) Her bloc was big enough, but she alienated some of her voters by being an arrogant little snot.
iii) This one's for the conspiracy theorists: The producers didn't want a controversy on their hands because of her naked pictures, so they fudged the results to get her off the show.

With Antonella gone, there's now a hot girl vacuum that needs to be filled. Gina is a little rough around the edges, and Haley might be able to if we ignore the fact that she's engaged/married. Maybe Jordin? When does she turn 18?

Nick__C (not verified) Thu, 2007-03-08 22:22

P.S. Since Brandon has a similar style as the three superior female black singers, I figure his head is on the chopping block for next week. Unless Phil pulls out another stinker or Sanjaya's bloc doesn't hold up, Brandon is a goner.

Art (not verified) Thu, 2007-03-08 22:11

I agree why is Sanjaya still there. He is a terrible singer!!!

Mitchw (not verified) Thu, 2007-03-08 21:13

Clearly Sanjaya could not have won. Here's my guess how he did it: Its called "powerdialer" a voting system used for casting thousands of multiple votes simultaneously.
A simple traceroute from the "speedyvote" host that idol uses would most likely reveal the use of a redialer feed through a cisco call manager.
My bet is he has a lot of friends in the help desk industry that have put his votes over the top.
There is no way he could have honestly won.

The Critic Thu, 2007-03-08 21:24

or perhaps there are thousands of young girls, or guys, who think he's cute and want to see more of him...

Fred Q (not verified) Thu, 2007-03-08 20:18

Guys, for real, who can vote for Sanjaya??? What is this guy still doing there? Is he the 2007 version of William Hung??????
