American Idol 2009 Grand Finale - LIVE results!
Are you ready America? Your 8th American Idol is about to be crowned. This is the Grand Finale of American Idol!
Adam Lambert or Kris Allen? The polls are close but it's looking like it's going to go Adams way. But don't count your chickens just yet. In 2 and a bit hours we should know the result.
Just under 100,000,000 million votes came in last night, bringing the total number of votes for this season to 624million!!
Mikalah Gordon is in Kris Allen's hometown of Conway, AR where there is a crazy crowd awaiting the result. Carly Smithson is in San Diego where there is a very vocal crowd waiting in anticipation for the result.
Kicking off the show is the Top 13 with a performance of 
So What.
Last years winner, Mr David Cook comes out to perform Permanent. Does it seem like it was an entire year ago that he was on the stage with David Archuleta? You'll be able to buy this song performance on iTunes tonight with the proceeds going to a charity.
We now pay tribute to those who didn't quite make it and have some awards - The Golden Idol awards. The first award is for Outstanding Male. The nominees are: Wil Kunick. Michael Gurr. Elijah Scarlett. Dean-Anthony Bradford. Nick Mitchell aka Norman Gentle. Of course, it's Nick Mitchell. He performs a semi-impromptu And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going. Awesome.
Lil Rounds and Queen Latifa perform the first duet of the night. You've Got My Heart in Chains.
Anoop Desai starts singing I'm Yours and is joined on stage by Jason Mraz.
It's then time to see the journey of Kris Allen. Kris then performs Kiss a Girl with Keith Urban. I can't image Adam Lambert singing this song.
The girls of season 8 take to the stage to sing Glamorous before Fergie comes out to join them and sings Big Girls Don't Cry before she welcomes the Black Eyed Peas to the stage for a performance of Boom Boom Pow.
The next Golden Idol for Best Attitude and the nominees are: Katrina Darrell aka Bikini Girl. Alexis Cohen. Tiffany Shedd. The winner is, of course, Bikini Girl who is, of course, mostly naked! She sings Vision of Love. She's a little flat. Kara then steps out from behind the giant American Idol screen to join her for a duet. Apparently she was dared to do that so some charity is going to be benefiting nicely from that performance.
Allison Iraheta performs a duet of Time After Time with Cyndi Lauper.
Danny Gokey takes the stage with Lionel Richie and perform a duet of Just Go and All Night Long.
A fully painted Kiss take to the stage with Adam Lambert to sing Rock 'n Roll All Nite. Awesome!
Carlos Santana performs Smooth with the Top 13 and then the final Ford commercial of the season.
There's a big surprise for Kris and Adam. Ford have given them both new Hybrids.
Michael Sarver and Steve Martin take to the stage for a duet. Hang on. Steve Martin? He's playing a banjo!
The Idol guys sing Do Ya Think I'm Sexy but there is no sign of Rod Stewart. And then, there he is, rising out of the bottom of the stage. He sounds terrible as he sings Maggie May
It's time for the last Golden Idol award of the night. Outstanding Female. Tatiana Del Toro has to be the winner of this award. She rushes the stage while Ryan tries to go to an add break, takes his mike and starts to sing Saving All My Love (again) while security chase her.
Adam and Kris perform a duet together as the final moments of the show start to air before we get a result. The song? We are the Champions and are backed up by Queen themselves. What an incredible finish. Adam was outstanding once again and was certainly the more memorable of the two.
It's the final ad break. Next up. The announcement and the winner of American Idol 2009.

guys and girls, how can anyone say Kris is more talented than Adam? Even if his screaming (as some of you call it) is not your cup of tea, isn't it obvious that this guy is the most talented we've ever had since the good old days of Freddie Mercury? Or is it that Americans cannot accept a (possible) gay idol? Come to think of it, not many gay stars/celebrities in America- they know they might not be received.
On the contrary, look at Elton John. Or George Michael. Or Freddie Mercury. BRITISH who made it big despite their sexuality. Maybe Brits are more open and unbias.
Nevertherless, as most of us agree, we're sure his sexuality didn't play a role in him losing. So i'm at a loss as how this could happen. Kris is a nice guy who can sing and know how to make a song his own, but his voice is average. Adam has a voice that is versatile-he can sing incredible ballads, he can go high and still keep it in tune. It has took AI 8 yrs to find someone like him. He really is 1 in a billion. He shouldn't even be in an amatuer competition like this. He didn't even fit in. He looked out of place. It's like having Michael Jackson among your top 13.
But it's good, because now the world knows him. I live on the opposite side of the globe. There is no dispute her about who has more talent. No disrespect to Kris at all, I genuinely think he is the most humble, nicest guy on TV and I'm happy for him.
In this case, winning isn't everything. Time will tell right?

End those protests & insults. They are NO DOUBT the Best 2 of finalists and both truly stand in their own Limelight.
THE SUN- ADAM natural star, he belongs to entertainment industry with his own daring and forward style. Charismatic & stylish. He is a statement of his own.
THE MOON- KRIS shines shyly but surely, he has more room in the making towards a star. Quietly confident & hopeful. He can convey a statement to the world.
Adam makes you indulge in him. Kris makes you indulge with him.
Adam sure can sing almost anything with the range of keys he cover but those high notes get overbearing after awhile... If Kris is criticized as "anywhere can find" vocal, it makes 2 of them cos Adam can write off as 1 of the plenty of 'rockers' who all sound alike at the top of their lungs...But people don't really wanna rock all the time... However, I do think Adam can capture many individualistic souls with his sultry melancholic ballads... He attracts with his young, hippie, non-conformist yet clean & approachable looks. Whereas Kris's style is boring to most but unassuming and fresh. He's the ordinary star with originality. If Kris hits the right path, he will be a classic star as he ages.
The song 'No Boundaries' not so great but nice and as usual meant to be inspiring? It's too wordy and too high for both of them.
Some people claimed that it was written in favor to Kris which I thought otherwise.
The high notes & chorus are obviously catered to Adam's vocal, but even with his high strummed lungs he had his pitchy moments...
To listen to Kris's first attempt at that song made people worried for him, but he tried his best & sang with all his heart loud and fierce. Not to mention he did it under great stress that Adam has better advantage... Personally I think Kris's version has more punch in it and it was momentum. He proved he's the real owner of that song in his winning encore.
To share with you, I had no eyes on Kris to begin with. They were widely set on Adam until the final 5, when my heart then goes to smiley Danny- The master class vocal voted out without a struggle, with less than exciting to bring to the table....I was kinda disappointed. When the 2 finalists are concluded, that "What the hell is Kris doing there?" did came up on me. But the star in Kris was determined to draw my attention, he uncovered his potentials and qualities, though not as LOUD as Adam but definitely . He is truly the Dark Horse and he will be a Golden Horse in the longrun.
Having said that, there're both great and potentially qualified as your AMERICAN IDOLS!
Adam deserves the attention but KRIS deserves the title.
I think they were both talented, but I've never liked the style of music that Adam likes to sing. I did enjoy his ballads. Regardless, I voted multiple times for Kris, because I like his music style. I hope they put his CD out soon. I can't wait to kick back with a glass of wine and listen to some Kris Allen.
It really doesn't matter who won. They will both put out albums and we will all be able to enjoy them. We're clearly lucky that American Idol found these two talented young men and shared them with us. I look forward to see the talent that next season brings.
Adam Lambert was a-dam sight better than any of the other contestants. He and Allison should have been 1 and 2.
I think that Kris won because he connected with the audience. You felt the songs that he sung. That is what made him the next american idol.

It's OK guys.. We know that Adam is more talented and stunning than Kris.. Kris just won the competition but he will be a karaoke singer.. Just wait for ADAM's single and buy his album.. It would be nice because he is jus gonna be a super and phenomenal star in Hollywood...
I love the comment "guy with a cookie cutter voice". Just the other night, while in my car, I heard a song on the radio (and wish I could remember the name). And do you know who it sounded like?? ADAM! Wow, that guy is so "original" and "talented". There is no way someone else sounds like him. Can you read the sarcasm?? The fact of the matter is, Adam is not original. He did the same thing every week. I never had to listen to him because I knew what it was going to sound like. A little bit of singing and A LOT of screaming. Nothing original there.
America, in my opinion, got it right (although I feel it should have been Danny).

OK, I remember Allison Iraheta singing with Cindi Lauper--it was great. And I remember Adam Lambert absolutely rocking the house with Kiss, and bit later with Queen, but I really don't recall what Cris sang last night. Nice guy though and he sure can sing, but Lambert is the star.
I am glad Kris won. Danny was my fav...Adam is a great performer but needs to be doing broadway musicals with how well of a theatrical performer he is. He would do great in a metal band too if he found the right one for his image. Kris will do well too and was the best choice for an 'American (pop) Idol' between the two.
Good season with lots of talent...I am sure Allison, Matt, Danny, Adam and Kris will do very well for thierselves!

See I disagree. I don't think Adam would be good in a Metal band. He is to technical of a singer, too groomed and trained. I am a big metal fan. the great thing about metal bands is that it does not revolve around the singer, in fact more often than not, the singers are downright awful, and it works with the raw aggressiveness of the music. Look at Bruce Dickenson from Iron Maiden. He couldn't sing his way out of a wet paper bag...with scissors in his hand. BUT it works perfect for metal.
I think Adam is too trained for a true metal band.

Yeah youre right... Adam is too technical and dsnt have the EDGE for metal. Even the edge he does have seems forced. Like I keep saying....Adams an actor....a stage show...... so he can sing high so what?? Im not disputing his talents yes he can sing and its okay for brief moments (when hes singing in key...) LOL but I have always perfered KRIS's style. I love everything about him from his voice to his guitar playing.....everything!!!!!!!!!!!
I dont like Adams vocal nterpertation or his tone.... and lets face whether we realize it or not appearance has something to do with it too. I found Adams appearance distracting and his style irritating.

The contest is over now and Kris and Adam can pursue their dreams and we can support the man of our choice. They both have an amazing loyal fan base. ...and future ahead!

Ya know, the American people were just not ready for a out there kinda guy to represent us as the American Idol. Adam is a terrific perfomer and singer and people do want to buy a cd from him. Poor Chris will just kinda fade away like most of the other Idols that have won the contest. It has been the Idols that have come in second, like Adam or like Daughtrey, that have done really, really well. Chris just does not have what it takes to sell cd's like the others. I am not saying that he can't sing, he can, but no presence on stage. He is just there.

Kris doesnt just stand there he usually has a guitar in his arms or a piano infront of him and he always connects with the audiance with or without them...in an engaging genuine way. In a pair of jeans and a t-shirt --with a beautiful voice and no contrived stage act or flashy crap-----hes the real deal.....Btw, hes an amazing songwriter too.

As a Brit, i've just caught the finale and was probably as shocked as the rest of you that Kris won. I disagree that following the win, Kris will just fade away, I think he has shown over the previous weeks with his 'artistry' (Kara's favorite word), that he will be just fine, in fact I think he will do very well. He is in the mould of Jason Mraz and hopefully will have as much success.
Adam was excellent for most of the competition and I can only imagine that as people thought he was going to win they didn't need to vote. Chances are, Danny's supporters would have voted for Kris rather than Adam.
Either way I expect both to be successful, as well as Danny in the coming years.
My thoughts go to David Cook on the loss of his brother to brain cancer and to perform Permanent the way he did was commendable.
Also role on Daughtry's new album, can't wait!
During the Queen segment Adam shined brightly, making it obvious that he is heads above Kris. I am still in shock... how in the heck did a guy with a cookie cutter voice win out over the unique, far more talented guy. Even Kris vocalized that Adam deserved the win!

Who knows who really won? How can you really know, when one person can vote literally hundreds of times? If it was done similar to Dancing with the stars ,where one phone line gets only a certain amount of votes, then it would be fairer. And each state should get a certain amount of electoral votes over the popular vote. Just kidding... I say this because I heard that 38 million votes were from Arkansas. LOL - maybe it had something to do with chads
There is nothing typical about Kris. Most Idol winners have rediculously high vocal ranges and over sing everything...!!!!! Kris was a gentler more pure voice and though he could hit plenty of octives out of his comfort zone... he never veered too much which made him very appealing to listen to. He had genunity and SOUL and an honesty about him....and we all felt it.
Finally A SOFTER more tender voice wins IDOL! But now on to the more important stuff.... making albums and pursuing his real dreams!! Idol was just one contest of many ... and Kris embraced his victory the best he knew how...but I think hes more concerned with bigger things. and bigger better things are in store for him.

I haven't been this mad in a long time! I cannot believe that Kris won this competition. ADAM is the MAN -- I haven't watched much of American Idol in years past, but did this year I watched every week so I could hear the incredible vocals of Adam...is this contest rigged? I am so disappointed...I will not watch AI again....ADAM rocks and I will be buying his music (Kris? Kris who? Borrringgggg)
Yeah, what a joke and it goes to show that America just does not get it. This was my first time watching Idol and it was due to my bro telling me about this guy Adam. Adam's voice was far superior over any of the other contenders. No worries, Adam will sign (if not already) with a big name band and will make way more cash than he would have under Simon. Would love to see Slash sign him with his new band......Come Slash, the boy can flat out sing and metal is definitely his genre..........

I have to say that i've watched every seasoon since the show begAn...and this finale was by far the best! i was on a high-note and thought American Idol just turned itself around....another season i will watch UNTIL the results came in. This was the biggest upset since allison was kicked off. Come on America what happened with voting for "talent" and not b/c of how different or far-right one is! IT'S ABOUT TALENT!!!! The last two standing should have been Adam and Allison. Adam was flawless throughout the competition and Allison was amazing, especially at 16. Leave it to American's to chose popularity over TALENT!!! ADAM is the AMERICAN IDOL in my eyes!!! I'm through with American Idol!!!

I am totally pissed at the results and only because I feel the voting line numbers for Adam (lines 03 and 05) had a womans voice saying "hello nasty boys" and then I would hang up so I don't know what else was said but I find that having 2 of his 3 lines to vote not working properly was an unfair advantage for Kris. I was able to get through on line 1 to vote but it still seems unfair. I did miss hearing them acknowledge a problem but my husband said they did say something about it. Well its all over now.

This result was insane!!! Adam - a far more talented singer with much more finesse and tone. Seasoned, more range and a greater stage presence for sure! Kris is good - but certainly not the level of what Adam IS. Still, Adam will succeed and Kris will aspire - it's just disappointing that "America" didn't vote properly - this is a TALENT contest, NOT a popularity contest! I think I'm DONE with Idol...at least until next season! Don't let this effect you, Adam! YOU'RE the Champion!
yeah, Kris is a good singer, but I thought Adam is more of what todays music is all about. the energy, voice and stage personality is what people want to listen to. He will be another Daughtry!
That is such a joke. Im sorry but Kris Allen should even be in this Finale. Adam is 10X the singer Kris is, and so is Danny and Matt. Oh well, in the end, it's all up to Americas voting and Kris was the most popular.

It is "AR." Those are the first two letters of "ARkansas."
