American Idol Episode 14 - Top 10 Girls Perform - Review

Submitted by The Critic on Tue, 2006-02-28 19:06

Now that the first round of American Idol eliminations is over, perhaps we'll see some great performances as the girls take the stage in the hopes of securing a spot in the top 12. Tonight, the final 10 remaining girls will perform in the hopes that they can win your vote and a couple of them really need to step it up if they don't want to be going home on Thursday night.

Ryan tells us that last Thursday was the biggest night for TV in more than a decade with Survivor, The finals of Dancing with the Stars and the Figure Skating showdown at the Winter Olympics up against American Idol with just under 78 Million viewers, American Idol came out on top by 2 to 1.

First up tonight is:

Katharine McPhee
Song choice: All is Fair In Love All in Love Is Fair
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5701
TXT Vote to 5701
My Thoughts: I really like listening to Katharine sing. She is a very controlled and accomplished vocalist. Not a lot of 'performance' but beautifully sung.
Randy: Thought it was a safe choice. Not best performance. Just ok for him.
Paula:
You moved me. You moved America. It wasn't a song choice that connected with me enough.
Simon: This show isn't just about singing. You can't just be in your own world because the American audience will forget that performance 3 or 4 contestants later.

Kinnik Sky
Song choice: Here For the Party Here for the Party
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5702
TXT Vote to 5702
My Thoughts: I'm not liking this at all. She's got a lot of spunk on the stage but I don't think the song really suits her voice.
Randy: I liked the original but I don't think it showcased your vocal ability but at least it showed your personality.
Paula:
At this stage in the competition you really need to be choosing songs that show your range so push yourself and take those risks.
Simon: On the plus side, you took a risk and did a song that will be more memorable than last weeks song choice. On the downside, that's the kind of performance I'd expect coming off a ride at Mountain Mountain.

Lisa Tucker
Song choice: Who's Lovin' You Who's Lovin' You
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5703
TXT Vote to 5703
My Thoughts: With every performance Lisa Tucker gives she proves that she is a professional. Whatever happens in this competition, Lisa Tucker will be having a successful recording career. She is simply superb.
Randy: Didn't show it for me tonight. It was just alright.
Paula:
When you've got it, you've got it. I don't know why you haven't been signed already. Regardless of this show, you're a star.
Simon: The great thing about this is that this is a great showcase for you in front of 30 or 40 million people every week but you don't want to come over as a very young girl singing grown up songs cause I think you're better than that.

Melissa McGhee
Song choice: Why Haven't I Heard from You Why Haven't I Heard from You
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5704
TXT Vote to 5704
My Thoughts: I liked the verse of this song but Melissa has kinda fallen away in the chorus. She's actually really good performing the verses but the chorus just seems empty. I'm guessing she is a smoker by the husk in her voice.
Randy: That song was a great choice for you. It was great to hear that husky voice return. That was hot.
Paula:
That was good to see you come out of your shell. Each week I want to see more and more. You're unique in this competition.
Simon: I love your voice but I thought it was the wrong song. For some reason I don't think you're making a connection with the audience yet. You have to do something with the wow factor because no one is going to remember that song.

Heather Cox
Song choice: Hero Hero
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5705
TXT Vote to
My Thoughts: I just don't find Heather authentic. She can sing but it just comes across as very acted. She's cute but I don't think that is enough to keep around for much longer.
Paula: I think you improved on last week but when you sing songs like that you are going to be compared to icons.
Randy: You look great but when you choose songs by these kind of artists you are going to pale in comparison.
Simon: The problem was it was like one of those ghastly pagents where someone gets up and sings Mariah. It's pointless to get up and sing something when you can't match the great voices.

Brenna Gethers
Song choice: Last Dance Last Dance
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5706
TXT Vote to 5706
My Thoughts: I don't like this performance at all. Brenna is flat in too many places. I didn't like that at all.
Paula: I don't see that magic happening from you.
Randy: You and Simon are quite a bit alike. The attitude and vocals weren't really there.
Simon: I would change the word dance to chance. Everything from the performance, vocal delivery and dancing is what I've seen on holiday at bars. I think that might be the last we see of you.

Paris Bennett
Song choice: Wind Beneath My Wings Wind Beneath My Wings (LP Version)
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5707
TXT Vote to 5707
My Thoughts: Paris' voice sounds so mature. Her range and tone is just fantastic. She is a sheer joy to watch.
Paula: I like your fashion style tonight. You're an amazing performer. I just want to remind you to bring the fun and youth that you have to the competition.
Randy:
You're like a young Lauren Hill. You don't have to play it safe ever. You weren't as scorching as you were last week but you were hot.
Simon: You don't want to look 17 and sound 50.

Ayla Brown
Song choice: I Want You To Need Me I Want You to Need Me
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5708
TXT Vote to 5708
My Thoughts: I'm not really enjoying this as much as I was looking forward to it. Ayla has a lot of work to do to reach the bar that Lisa, Paris and Katharine have set.
Randy: You picked a very good song for you and it actually came off as a nice package. I liked it.
Paula:
I think you want this really bad. It's another week that you've pleasantly surprized me. You picked the right song and you were even better than you were last week.
Simon: You strike me as the kinda girl who always gets A's. You are working harder than anyone on this. The problem I have is that you sometimes want rawness but you always strive for perfection so it's a little bit mechanical for me.

Kellie Pickler
Song choice: Something to Talk About Something to Talk About
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5709
TXT Vote to 5709
My Thoughts: This is a great song choice for Kellie. The twang in her voice is great and I'd actually go as far as saying this is her best performance on the show so far.

Paula:
Can you get any cuter? You're adorable. You picked a great song and you made us smile and dance. Keep on going.
Randy: We got a hot one tonight Dawg Pound. You did your thing. You had a good time doing your thing. I liked it a lot.
Simon: I don't know what it is but you cannot help but like you. You're cute and likeable and if they haven't already, America is going to fall in love with you.

Mandisa Hundley
Song choice: Cry Cry
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5710
TXT Vote to 5710
My Thoughts: This is the Mandisa I was expecting last week. She suits this song much better this week and rounds out the show nicely with her big performance.
Paula: You are one of a kind and you are needed in this competition. You have a great vocal range. You're wowing us.
Randy:
The verse was a little rough for me but when you get to the center of your tone it was good. I wasn't so sure on that song on you. I want to hear it all from you but I didn't hear it all tonight.
Simon: I think America will keep you around for a while. I much preferred the way you looked last week though. You look too cabaret this week. I agree with Randy that you haven't bought it yet but when you're on it I think you're the best female vocalist in this competition.

Voting Numbers and Voting Information

LOVED the guys tonight.

LOVED the guys tonight. HATED the girls. I wish we could kick off the girls and keep the guys. I do think Brenna & David are history this week. My other guess would be Sway although that's sad. I think he is really good. The girls were so bad it could be any of them.
